What are the various food preparation methods?
These are the different food preparation techniques generally used:
1. Sauteing
Sauteing is a difficult cooking method that can be used with so many different kinds of food, from fish, vegetables, and meat to noodles. In this technique, the food is tossed around in the skillet quite a bit.
2. Stir-Frying
In a classic stir fry, the food is always cut into similarly sized bite-sized pieces so that it cooks evenly. This method is usually referred to in various Asian cuisines.
3. Braising
Usually, this term is used in conjunction with meat. In braising, the food is often browned first, though not necessarily, and then it is finished in a low oven.
4. Steaming
In this cooking technique, a consistent flow of hot air cooks the food gently, and it is very popular in Asian cooking.
5. Baking
Baking simply means cooking food in an oven, usually uncovered, using indirect, dry heat. The terms are often used when discussing foods like bread, muffins, and other well-baked foods.
6. Roasting
Roasting is one of the least hands-on cooking methods, perfect for when you need to get dinner going but then have some other things clamoring for your attention before it’s time to eat.
7. Broiling
Broiling refers to cooking foods under a broiler, which sometimes has a separate drawer in your oven and sometimes requires you to place the top rack in your oven. Foods that take best advantage of this cooking method are those that cook quickly.
8. Grilling
Grilling is the food preparation technique of cooking over direct heat, usually fairly high heat.
